Is there anything better than exercising outdoors on a nice and crisp autumn day? The air is clear, and it's neither too hot nor too cold outside. The desire to go out and run is there - you're motivated, on the go and want to hit the running track. But how should you dress for outdoor exercise and running in autumn? The temperature can be around zero with cold and humid air on some days, while other days are warm and sunny. Here we give our best tips regarding exercise clothes and warming accessories for running plus other outdoor activities!
Fall running and workout clothes checklist
- Choose clothes made of functional materials. Even if it's autumn in the air, you'll get hot and sweaty while running. So choose functional clothing that breathes and wicks away moisture. Don't wear cotton close to your body as moisture stays in cotton garments, which increases the risk of getting cold and freezing.
- Don't dress too warmly. Think layers. A mistake many people make is dressing too warm. It's easy to want to put on a thicker running jacket when the autumn chill creeps in, but the risk is that you'll start sweating after a few minutes. A good rule of thumb is to freeze the first five minutes of your run. That way, you'll be just right for the rest of your workout!
- Wind protection. A lighter running jacket or vest is usually enough in the fall. It protects you from wind and moisture on the most exposed parts of your body. You can also wear a pair of shorts made of functional material over your running tights.
- Running shoes with grip. Shoes with good grip are a must for autumn running. The ground is often wet and slippery - the risk of slipping on leaves and stones increases. Later in the autumn there may also be frost on the ground.
- Running socks. A good pair of running socks that are both breathable and warm are preferable in the fall. During cooler autumn days, a pair of warm running socks in a mix of merino wool and functional materials are the best thing you can wear on your feet. These both warm and transport moisture, and are a must when it comes to sports socks for outdoor training ! On warmer autumn days, a pair of thinner functional socks for running may be enough. These dry quickly and are suitable for all types of outdoor training. Read more in our guide: Why you should invest in merino wool socks !
